Wifredo Lam Original oil on canvas
Artist: Wifredo Lam (Cuba 1902-France 1982) Technique: oil on canvas.Measurements: 52 x 36.5 cmDated: 1976Signed: lower right corner.Wifredo Lam was born on December 8, 1902 in Sagua la Grande, Cuba. He is the eighth child of Lam-Yam, born in Canton around 1820, and emigrated to the Americas in 1860, and Ana Serafina Castilla, born in 1862 in Cuba and a mestizo descendant of families originating in Africa and Spain. At the beginning of the 1930s, his surrealist influence was evident, as well as that of Henri Matisse and possibly also that of Joaquín Torres García.In 1936, when visiting a Pablo Picasso exhibition, he felt strongly attracted to him, both artistically and politically. In 1936, helped by his friend Faustino Cordón, he joined the Republican army as a volunteer in its fight against Franco's coup troops. He draws anti-fascist posters and is in charge of the management of a munitions factory. The violence of the fighting inspires his great canvas entitled The Civil War.In 1938, he went to live in Paris, where Picasso himself took him under his wing and nurtured his interest in African art and primitive masks. In that same year, he traveled to Mexico where he stayed with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
