LINNEAUS TRIPE Amerapoora, Guatama's Shrine from Burma Views, 1855-1857, 13.5x10.5" lightly albumenized salt print from waxed paper negative ASG# LT/1061
This photograph depicts a Buddhist shrine at Amerapura (then the capital city of Burma and now a township of Mandalay City, in present-day Myanmar) Captain Linnaeus Tripe made this photograph in 1855, during his first commission for the Government of India. Tripe was the official photographer on a diplomatic mission to obtain Burmese King Mindon's recognition of British annexation of territory following the Anglo-Burmese War of 1852. Tripe's role on this expedition was to gather military intelligence, documenting mineral resources, topography, and religious customs. Credit The Clark Museum
