This richly printed minimalist landscape shows the mass and darkness of the distant plateau and the valley and cliffs beyond.

Roger Fenton (1819-1869) celebrated in the History of Photography for work made as one of the first war photographers, photographing the English in Crimean War March 8 to June 26, 1855, against the Russians. He was a founder and first Secretary of the great British Royal Photographic Society. Besides scenic his architectural views are highly regarded. He had a short photographic career from 1852-1862 then sold his negatives and prints to Francis Frith. Credit Luminous Lint
