18th Century Continental Hunting Plug Bayonet
11.25" blade. 17.5" overall with scabbard. Single edge spear point blade with a 5.75" false edge. Hilt appears to be made of horn and has brass fittings, including a guard with a flathead and octagonal tool quillons. Blade is etched with a boar on one side and stag on obverse side, surrounded by floral work and gold plating. Includes a brown leather scabbard with brass fittings. Scabbard is marked From Waterloo to one side, but blade is most likely from the mid-18th century. Possibly Spanish or German.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition
Good. Blade has a mottled coloration overall due to clusters of pitting, but etchings retain much of gold plating. Hilt has a fine 2" crack. Scabbard has scattered scratches and losses, with small dents, discoloration, and scratches to brass fittings.
