French Model 1866 Chassepot Rifle

11mm. 32.5" barrel length. SN: P7995. Bright metal finish overall set in a straight wrist walnut stock mounting sling swivels to the lower barrel band and toe. Single shot bolt-action needle fire gun intended to fire paper cartridges utilizing a sharp firing pin. Item mounts adjustable rear ladder and front blade sights with the right barrel mounting the bayonet lug to muzzle right. Left receiver is marked St. Etienne MLE 1866 with the date at the right barrel octagonal reading S.1872. Inspection markings to the octagonal faces include J.H followed by circle B and circle J. Right barrel is initialed ME with the stock cartouche reading B.S. OCTOBRE. J. 1872 enclosing ME. Stock serial number does not match, and the item lacks the rubber obturator. Comes with an old metal inventory tag attached to the upper sling loop.

Condition
Good. Bore is Bright with crisp rifling throughout. Metal finish remains much of its polish but shows a pattern of light surface roughness and shows a mottled brown patina overall with further spots of patina with further pitting in spots along the barrel. Deep brown patina to bolt handle. Stock shows some rounded edges suggesting it may have been sanded at some point with scattered dents, scratches, and stains overall.
