Gallager Carbine
American Civil War
.52 caliber. 22" barrel. SN: 9828. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut buttstock with iron patchbox. Single shot percussion ignition breechloading cavalry carbine with sling bar and ring on reverse, L-shaped leaf rear sight and dovetailed front sight. Back action percussion lock marked GALLAGER'S PATENT/JULY 17TH 1860 in two lines at the tail and MANUFACTURED BY/RICHARDSON & OVERMAN/PHILADA over the serial number directly behind the hammer. The second two lines are essentially illegible with only the first line and serial number fully readable.
Approximately 18,000 Gallager Carbines were produced during the Civil War, 13,000 in percussion like this one and 5,000 in 56-56 Spencer. This example is in the serial number is in the range of carbines issued to the 4th TN Mounted Infantry (US) from East Tennessee.

Condition
Good. Bore about good, moderately oxidized with pitting and good rifling. Barrel with traces of finish and a mottled grayish patina, showing even pitting. Receiver with added finish and some light pitting. Lock plate cleaned with markings weak. Mechanically functional action and lock. Stock with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
