Harpers Ferry Rifled & Sighted U.S. Model 1842 Rifled Musket
Harpers Ferry Rifled & Sighted U.S. Model 1842 Rifled Musket
American Civil War
.69 caliber. 42" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, steel furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading musket upgraded by rifling and sighting. Heavily pitted lock with weak markings including a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US forward of the hammer and HARPERS/FERRY/1848 in three vertical lines at the tail. No Harpers Ferry sub-inspection is visible on the barrel, but the small, Harpers Ferry style V/P/{Eagle Head} marks are present. Counterpane with the shadow of an illegible cartouche at the tail. Retains the correct rear sight base and front sight blade from the rifling and sighting program, with the rear sight ladder an incorrect replacement. Retains both sling swivels and a correctly dished trumpet head ramrod. Includes a reproduction sling.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition
Fair to good. Bore moderately pitted and oxidized with visible rifling. Metal cleaned and polished, leaving markings light on the barrel, lock heavily pitted with very weak markings. Barrel with some pitting near breech, and scattered discoloration, oxidation and surface roughness. Lock mechanically functional. Stock sanded and refinished with a significant amount of wood replaced in the obverse butt and with some wood filler as well.
