The Penny Piper of Saranac 1916 Signed by Stephen Chalmers to Walter Scott RARE

"The Penny Piper of Saranac", 1916, signed and inscribed by author Stephen Chalmers to Walter Scott.

"To Colonel Walter Scott from Stephen Chalmers a small mark of great respect."

"The Penny Piper" provides a brief sketch of Robert Louis Stevenson's life at Saranac Lake during the winter of 1887-88.

Walter Scott was born in Montreal. His parents were Scots and when he was three years old they moved to Boston. At the age of ten, he managed a small fruit store near Harvard College where he sold apples and plums. One of his customers was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. At the age of 15 he was employed by the Butler Brothers, wholesale distributors of general merchandise, and at the age of 18 moved to New York City.

In 1932, he retired as senior vice president after fifty-four years of continuous service. On the day of his retirement, his office was filled with flowers and telegrams came from President Hoover and former President Coolidge. This book also contains an old note on the back of an old engraving of "The Coves of Cork" [Ireland] Dated June 20th "Up through the regions uniting many Irish towns it is a beautiful county"...
