Wouter Schoute, also known as Gauter Schouten, was a 17th-century Dutch surgeon best known for his medical voyage to Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. While his career focused solely on surgery, his book ‘Voyages’ became an important account of the natural science in 17th-century Indonesia. This work includes 10 illustrations of animals encountered on the voyage including walruses, elephants, rhinos, ‘sea horse’ (cheval marin) or hippopotamus, caiman crocodile, and mongoose.
