1778 Drunken Barnaby’s Four Journeys Brathwait English Satire Chevy Chase
Richard Brathwait was a 17th-century English poet who is best known for his travel records of his journeys through England entitled ‘Barnabae Itinerarium’. More commonly known as ‘Drunken Barnaby’s Four Journeys’, this book is a satirical, humorous work which made light of drunkenness, persuading the reader that it was “the very fountain from which all wit flowed.” (Critical Review, 1805).
This 1778 edition, like other versions, features both English and Latin translations in verse, which contain descriptions of English towns and a vast knowledge of Latin classical works. It also includes the ancient poem ‘Chevy Chase’ at the end of the book.
