(M. L. Rossvally, C. F. Cutter). The Jewish Doctor and the Drummer Boy.
First page inscribed: “Halifax Union Church Sunday School 1896.”
pp. 25, (3). Stained. Unbound. 12mo.
[New York, between 1893 and 1902].
Religious fable about a Civil War drummer boy, received wide circulation with the intended goal to convert Jews to Christianity.
Rossvally, a Union surgeon on the battlefield at Gettysburg, recounts his encounter with one Charlie Coulson, a mortally wounded drummer boy. So moved with the dying young soldier’s Christian faith, the Jewish doctor is motivated to forsake Judaism and become a Christian.
In fact, Rosvally’s account was entirely fictitious. He never was at Gettysburg and Charlie Coulson did not exist.
