(TALMUD). RABINOWITZ, RAPHAEL NATHAN NOTA. Ma’amar al Hadfasath HaTalmud [“Essay on the Printing of the Talmud.”]
FIRST EDITION.
pp. 132. Unbound. 8vo.
Munich, A. Huber, 1877.
R. Raphael Nathan Nota Rabinovicz (1835-88) is best known for authoring Dikdukei Sofrim, a massive work containing variant readings (girsa’os) of much of the Mishnah and two volumes of the Babylonian Talmud. Most significantly, Rabinovicz made use of Munich Codex Hebraica 95. Completed in 1342 it is the only existing handwritten copy of the entire Babylonian Talmud - without Christian censorship.
The present essay, assessing the printing of the Talmud over the previous 400 years, later appeared as the introduction to Dikdukei Sofrim (when finally published).
