(UKRAINE). Two Manuscripts Pertaining to Jewish Life in Early 20th Century YEKATRINOSLAV (DNIPRO).
Contains:
* Confirmation of Get (Harsha’ah) signed by R. BINYAMIN ZEV ZAKHEIM (1840-1913) Av Beth Din of the city, with stamp. 28th Iyar, 1900.
* Rabbinic ordination document for a R. Yechezkel ben Yehudah Leib, signed by Rabbis Zisha and Menachem Aryeh Cohen. 13th Sivan, 1906.
Yekatrinoslav, 1900 & 1906.
The Jewish community of Yekatrinoslav constituted up to 40% of the city’s population in the early 20th century. Due to the turbulent political situation, the Jews were often scapegoated, suffering from anti-Semitic incitement in 1904 and again in 1905 following the Russian defeat in the Russo-Japanese war. Over 100 Jews died in the riots that swept the city, the army preventing Jewish defense groups from protecting their brethren.
The successor to R. Zakheim at the helm of the community was R. Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, R. Menachem Mendel, who moved to the city in his youth upon his father’s rabbinic appointment.
