Item/Description: Two framed prints by Sioux artist Maxine Noel (Ioyan Mani). Both are signed and titled, in plate, across the bottom. "Dakota Mother and Child" and "Spirit of the Winds". Maxine Noel signs her artwork with her Sioux name IOYAN MANI, which translates as ‘Walk Beyond’.
Maxine Noel (1946- ) Sioux Artist. Maxine has mastered the skills of painting and drawing plus the processes of serigraphy, etching and stone lithography. (Her work is included in the collections of the Canadian Museum of History, the University of Western Ontario, the Canadian Native Arts Foundation in Toronto and the Whetung Ojibwa.
From Canadian Museum of History: Maxine Noel is Oglala Sioux, born on the Birdtail Reservation in Manitoba. Her Sioux name is Ioyan Mani, meaning "to walk beyond." Through fluid images, flowing lines, and subtle colours, she seeks to present what she sees as the essential characteristics of Indigenous peoples: their sensibilities, generosity and loving nature. Noel has received honours and accolades for her work with Indigenous cultures. In 2019, Noel was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for her work as a visual artist, and for encouraging and promoting creative expression within Indigenous communities.
