Tikar, Cameroon - Two Carved Wood Lions
Item/Description: Pair of large carved wood lions. Both in seated, crouching positions with mouths agape and tounges exposed. Within the Tikar community, these carved wood lions were kept in family compound shrine huts as more than simply pieces of art. They represented symbols of the unbroken family unit: relating to the living and to ancestors. (Tribal Art, Gulf of Guinea, Central African Floor Sculpture)
