A Rare Kwoma Minda Mask / Sculpture
A Kwoma Mindja carving. Kwoma people, Washkuk Hills, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Of typical form, the flattened plaque-like figure with long phallic nose as is found in carvings among the Kwoma, the face deeply concave with cut-out mouth, the body with raised prongs from the flat elongated form below the head. Mindja figures were used in the second of three rites among the Washkuk and were displayed in the Mens house to magically assist yam fertility. Nkuma art, though closely related to Kwoma art, is less cubistic and is characterized by a highly phallic nose and more rounded forms.Acquired by Marc Seidler from Lynda Cunningham, C. 1981. Measures 35 x 9 inches.
Condition: Fair, well worn
