A Carved wooden idol of Irawaki with arms raised to the heavens, carved and painted in traditional style and motifs, adorned with a grass skirt. irawaki. Kaia`imunu is the soothsayer for every major decision, whether it be for hunting pigs or crocodiles, or for fighting enemies. When the Urama people call on this spirit at the beginning of an expedition, they expect the canoe to be rocked by the kaia'imunu spirit residing in irawaki as a sign of encouragement. It is said that this spirit must also make the fish jump away from the canoe rather than towards it, otherwise the trip is cancelled. The sculpture measures on a custom display stand. Provenance: Collected 1980 or prior, from a Private New York Collection. 45.5 inches tall on its custom base.
Condition: Good, fair, one arm professionally re-attached.
