Dale Carnegie, Bestselling Self-Help Author, Helps Connect Mutual Friends

1p typed letter signed by American writer Dale Carnegie (1888-1955) as "Dale Carnegie"near center right. Written at Carnegie's home in the Forest Hills section of Queens, New York on June 22, 1936. On watermarked cream stationery with "Dale Carnegie / 27 Wendover Road / Forest Hills / New York City" letterhead embossed in black at top. Expected light paper folds, including a vertical one bisecting the connecting line between "Dale" and "Carnegie" in the writer's signature. A minor closed tear located at bottom left mentioned just for accuracy. Else near fine. 8.25" x 11".

Dale Carnegie wrote Connecticut short story writer Henry Albert Phillips (born 1880) regarding a meeting he had arranged between the latter and another friend, radio broadcaster Lowell Thomas (1892-1981).

In part:

"I spent last week-end with Lowell Thomas and I spoke to him about your coming over to interview him for an article in one of the radio fan magazines…

I am sending Mr. Thomas a carbon copy of this letter. If you want to communicate with him further, you can address him at the R C A Building.

And Tommy, if anything should happen that you should want to telephone Mr. Phillips, his telephone number is Redding 109-13…"

Carnegie's letter is a perfect illustration of his masterful--and often imitated--way with people. His relaxed and easy tone facilitates clear communication, and his genuine helpfulness and sincerity is reflected in every sentence. In the letter, then, Carnegie demonstrates some of the very friend-winning and influence-boosting techniques he outlined in his most famous bestseller, How to Win Friends and Influence People (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1936). Carnegie's book would be published four months later, in October 1936. The book has sold approximately 15,000,000 copies worldwide over the last 80 years and is considered a classic self-help text.

Dale Carnegie was a salesman and actor before turning to public speaking coaching and lecturing. The self-improvement guru dominated the field beginning in the mid-1910s. Carnegie's How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (1949) followed the monumental success of How To Win Friends. Several books were also published posthumously.

The nuances of networking demonstrated by Dale Carnegie himself!
