French Model 1866 Chassepot Rifle
Franco-Prussian War
11mm. 32.5" barrel. SN: F16735. Bright finish, steel furniture, European hardwood stock. Single shot bolt action "needle rifle" with military tangent rear sight, front sight blade, saber bayonet lug and sling swivels. Chamber dated 1867 with an S-prefix indicating Sainte-Etienne production, no receiver markings except for a K inspection mark. Bolt and cocking piece with matching serial number F24270 but not matching the gun. Cleaning rod mismatched as well. Obturator and needle in place. A solid, mid-grade example of the French needle rifle that introduced the concept of smaller bore ammunition to the military rifle world. Includes an incorrect pattern reproduction sling.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition
Good. Bore good with strong rifling and moderate oxidation. Metal with freckled oxidation and discoloration and a yellowish appearance from old, dried grease. Mechanically functional action. Needle and obturator intact. Stock sanded with storekeepers marks obliterated. Wood with scattered bumps, dings and mars and added finish.
