Early Colt Model 1878 hammer SxS shotgun, 12 gauge, 28" Damascus steel barrels, color case hardened receiver, checkered walnut two-piece round knob pistol grip stock, splinter fore end with Deeley/Edge lever release, blank round escutcheon plate in the buttstock, extractors, double triggers, steel bead front sight, clear factory markings. Mfg in 1886, the shotgun is in good antique condition, showing visible damascene pattern on the brown barrel with wear at the muzzle, thinning finish and scattered spots of surface rust. The rib has been resoldered at the muzzles with scratches and scrapes. The receiver displays dull gray color case hardened finish with fine pinprick pitting on the right rear of the lock plate. The trigger guard is broken at the rear and crudely re-attached. The stock is in good condition with indentations, bruises and flattening of the checkering. The pistol grip shows a hairline 2" crack on the right side and there is a crude repair at the toe. The buttstock ends with a smooth steel buttplate with corrosion and staining around the perimeter, providing a 14.25" LOP. The action functions well. The bores are dirty and rate fair with light pitting near the chambers.
